Are you funny? The Washington Centerville Public Library and the University of Dayton are sponsoring the Erma Bombeck Writing Competition, focusing on humor.

I have to admit. When I was younger, I always  wanted to write funny articles like Erma Bombeck. If you love her humor and style, you might want to enter this contest. Entries should be personal essays, 450 wrods or less. Categories are humor and human interest and should evoke positive emotions in the readers. Entries are only accepted online. Winners receive $100, publication on the website and in a newspaper, and admission to the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop.

Literal Latte’ Fiction Writing Contest

Literal Latte Fiction Writing Contest

Entry Fee: $10.00
Deadline: January 15, 2010
Guidelines: http://www.literal-latte.com/contests/#fiction_awards

Literal Latte offers several contests each year. It’s a highly competitive literary magazine that looks for high quality work. It’s also one of the last bastions of snail mail submissions, with no electronic submissions allowed. So in addition to the nominal entry fee, consider your cost of paper, ink, and postage.

This fiction contest will be followed by a short story contest. They have plenty of past winning entries online to read and study. Have fun with this one!

Highlights Fiction Contest 2010

Deadline: January 31, 2010

Entry fee: Free

Guidelines: http://www.highlights.com/highlights-fiction-contest

Welcome to 2010! The first contest I’ve located this year is the Highlights Fiction Contest. If you write for children, this free writing contest may be the one for you. In 750 words or less, tell a true story from your family. Stories for early readers should not be longer than 475 words. Highlights is hard to break into, so a clip of winning this contest will be quite an accomplishment.

The good news: There are three prizes of $1,000 and your story will be published in Highlights.

The not so good news: Your story becomes the property of Highlights. You give up your rights to the story.

The guidelines state that manuscripts must be mailed in; there are no electronic submissions. So if you’re entering this contest, be sure to send your manuscript with time to arrive by January 31, 2010.

Good luck!
