What Teens Really Want to Read

It’s not often I come across a post so insightful that I write another post about it. However, this morning I read a post by Elizabeth Langston, author of Whisper Falls,  talking about her first author’s event with a teen book club. After the reading, she chatted with the teens about what they look for in books.

Four main things I took away from her interview:

  1. Teens want more than just paranormal and Twilight knockoffs. They want books about all types of relationships.
  2. Teens want depth and complexity in the books they read. (This warms my heart, since I spend all day teaching kids to choose books with depth and complexity.) *sigh* I’m fanning my face right now. I love teens!
  3. Teens look to friends first for book recommendations. After that, they rely on librarians, parents, and online places such as Goodreads. (Are you reading this, all you politicos who suggest cuts to library services? Librarians are still KEY to getting teens to read. WE NEED LIBRARIANS.)
  4. The cover is everything when it comes to choosing a book.

What do you think? Do you have teens in your life who’ve shared some tips about what they like to read?

If you’d like to read more, check out Elizabeth Langston’s post Be Not Afraid.

Best Blogs of the Week in #WriteTips, #Writing, #Amwriting

It’s back! I went on a short hiatus as I wove my way around the web on blog tour. But I missed sharing the wonderful tidbits I find during my meanderings. So here again are some posts you may have missed this week in my Twitter feed.

This week, I think the most thought provoking article I found was the one about racial profiling in YA literature. A librarian discovered by talking to teens that many of them feel they’re being stereotyped in many novels. You’ll find the link under the YA Lit subheading of this post.

Also, since it’s Friday, I’m blogging at Honey Creek Books. This week I dug up some trivia about the Fall Equinox and Harvest Moon happening this month. Fascinating stuff. Really.

Blog Tour Schedule for Shades of the Future

Posted by Suzanne Lilly

Twitter @suzannelilly

Shades of the Future is available for sale now and its blog tours are in full swing. I’d be thrilled if you’d follow me through the tours and perhaps occasionally comment. Each week I’ll post a schedule so you’ll know where to find me and when.

Free Designer Glasses!

In honor of the sunglasses Mariah Davis uses to see the future, I’ll be giving away a pair of designer aviator sunglasses from Shoebuy.com to a commenter at the end of July’s tour stops. I’ll do the giveaway again at the end of August’s tour stops.

Shades of the Future cover art

Blog Tour attractions for July 16 – 20, 2012

  • July 16: I’ll be at Taryn Rae’s website, doing an interview. Taryn Rae is the author of Castaway Hearts, also from Turquoise Morning Press.
  • July 17: I’m doing a guest post about pets, and my mostly adorable granddog at Doctor’s Notes. Since Mariah, my main character, works at the Happy Paws Pet Rescue, I’m giving 10% of the royalties from this book to a pet rescue organization.
  • July 18: Read an exclusive new excerpt from Shades of the Future at the TeacherWriter blog. It’s all about Nothing Beats Chocolate Beet Cake, a specialty of Bess Beale, owner of the White Cottage Restaurant in Honey Creek.
  • July 19: The Selkie Reads Stories is Thursday’s stop on the book tour. You’ll get to know Mariah Davis better in this creative interview.
  • July 20: I’m at Jo Ramsey’s blog, with a post about what it’s like to have a premonition. Have you ever known about something before it happened? Come by and chat about it.

Week Two Blog Stops, July 23-27, 2012

  • July 23: What was your first car, and whatever happened to it? I’m warning you right now, this post at My Pathway to Books isn’t pretty. It isn’t about the cute little Volkswagen or sexy Camaro some of you might have driven as a first car. No, it’s quite hideous. I hope you’ll come by and share in the misery of my first car.
  • July 24: The Dream Seekers Adventures blog is the sensational stop of the day. I’m chatting about how to get kids reading and how to get them to love it. I’m going to tell you about my Magic Bullet for creating readers.
  • July 25: Today I’ll be at the TeacherWriteBookaholic blog sharing a story about the intersection of dreams and waking life.
  • July 26: Today we’re going to lighten up and have some fun with an interview on the Aside from Writing blog. I’ll tell some little known facts about myself, including my favorite candy, my favorite social media, and the book I always wish I’d written.
  • July 27: I’m thrilled to be on The Daydreamer blog talking about what your daydreams can tell you about yourself.

Book blurb for Shades of the Future to give you a hint of what the story is about:

What would you give to see the future? Would you make your dreams come true? Would you change the things you didn’t like?

Mariah Davis loves animals, running, and her hunk of a boyfriend, Kevin Creamer. Everything looks bright for her until the day she finds a pair of sunglasses that allow her to see the future.

When she glimpses a disaster looming, she tries to avoid it but fails. She has a car accident that lands her in a wheelchair, smashing her hopes for a running scholarship to the veterinary program at Ohio State University. She pushes Kevin away, thinking he’ll want to end their relationship now that she can’t walk.

Will she ever learn to trust and love again? She could search for an answer in the sunglasses. But she’s afraid what they reveal might destroy her.

Read more sample pages!

You can get a short excerpt of the book by sending an email to shadesofthefuture {at} gmail {dot} com. I won’t use your email address for anything but an announcement once or twice a year.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope to see you on the blog tour stops.

Purchase Shades of the Future at  Amazon for Kindle, Barnes and Noble for Sony Nook, Smashwords for all digital formats including Apple.
