According to the website, the next contest will open in January 2012. They're taking a long break. But in the meantime, you can read the winning entries here.

Interesting idea. I would be thrilled at the idea of having to buy a book to submit my manuscript. Any excuse to go into a bookstore is a good excuse for me!

Regardless, I do see how it could be alienating. Books are expensive. I only buy when they are on sale unless it is something I am desperate to read.

I wouldn't want to have to buy a book for every manuscript I submitted. I'd be broke before I'd made a dent in my submission list.

It's actually a horrible place and I don't think it's conducive to discovering talent at all. The books that rise to the top are the ones that are networked best, by those that are most popular or most annoying in constantly bugging everyone to "back" their book.

I thought the idea was a good one and I'm glad to see that kind of innovation from a mainstream publisher but in practice, it doesn't work and is horrible to witness.

Aw, Suzanne, you shouldn't have :-) But now that you have outed me, I suppose I shall accept this award in the name of all bloggers who have taken um, creative license, in order to make themselves sound scathingly brilliant!
