A Midsummer Tale at Toasted Cheese
Entry Fee: FREE
Deadline: June 21, 2008
Theme: Snapshots
Guidelines: http://www.toasted-cheese.com
This is a creative non-fiction contest. It’s not an essay, it’s not an article, and it’s not an autobiography. It’s a non-fiction story inspired by a photograph. So pull out your boxes of old snapshots and see what memories the Muse inspires you to write about.
The length limit is 3,000 words, and you must include the photo with your entry. Winners will receive an Amazon gift certificate, (not bad for a free contest,) and will be notified by July 31. First, second, and third place winners will have their stories posted in the Toasted Cheese Literary Journal.
There are explicit guidelines on the website, so be sure to check them out before writing your winning entry.
L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers Of The Future Contest
Entry Fee: FREE
Deadline: June 30, 2008
Genre: Short Stories
Guidelines: http://www.writersofthefuture.com/rules.htm
If you’re a new writer, and you’ve not been professionally published in a novel, more than one novelette, or more than three short stories, then you can enter this popular contest.
Send in your best science fiction, fantasy, or horror short story up to 17,000 words in length. If you win, you’ll be $1000 richer for first place, $750 for second, and $500 for third. Your work will be published in the next L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Anthology. In addition, the winners will receive a trip to the award ceremony in Seattle, and be registered for a week-long workshop. So what are you waiting for? The future is yours!

Life in the USA $1000 Essay Contest
Entry Fee: FREE
Deadline: June 30, 2008
Genre: Nonfiction
Guidelines: http://www.lifeintheusa.com/contest.htm
Here’s another creative-nonfiction contest looking for 500 word articles that shed light on the American immigrant experience. They ask that you query your idea first, rather than sending in the entire article. If your article is accepted for publication at http://www.lifeintheusa.com, it will be automatically entered into the contest. If you have an immigrant story to tell, this might be the place to submit it.
